What to do
Ten experiences that reveal Hokkaido's scale and cultural depth.
These are editorial anchors, not affiliate inventory. No short trip should attempt all ten: use them to choose a route chapter and understand the transfer, season or overnight it requires.
1
Odori Park: begin with Sapporo's civic spine
Odori cuts through central Sapporo as a long green public space and an orientation line through the city grid. Walk a section before branching toward museums, markets or neighborhoods; event installations and seasonal conditions can change how the park functions.

2
Historical Village of Hokkaido: read settlement history in context
This outdoor museum groups reconstructed and relocated buildings into town, farm, fishing and mountain-village environments from the Meiji, Taisho and early Showa periods. Use the exhibits to examine colonization and development history critically, then pair the visit with Ainu-led interpretation elsewhere.

3
Otaru Canal: understand the port before the postcard
The canal and its brick-and-stone warehouses preserve the commercial geography of Otaru's port era. Walk beyond one viewpoint, connect the waterway to the warehouse district and confirm current museum or cruise operations separately rather than assuming the promenade represents the whole city.

4
Upopoy: learn from a national center for Ainu culture
Upopoy in Shiraoi brings together the National Ainu Museum, a cultural park, performance, language and hands-on programs. Reserve enough time for interpretation rather than a photo stop, check the current program calendar and follow the institution's guidance on respectful participation.

5
Goryokaku: see Hakodate history from the star fort
The five-point fort and its surrounding park connect the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate with the emergence of modern Japan. The tower gives the clearest geometric reading, while the grounds repay a slower walk; confirm seasonal crowd and access conditions with Hakodate's official guide.

6
Daisetsuzan: treat the roof of Hokkaido as mountain country
Japan's largest national park spans a high volcanic landscape around peaks including Asahidake and Kurodake. Conditions can change quickly and brown-bear habitat is real; choose a route for the season and ability, carry appropriate equipment and follow current park, ropeway and trail notices.

7
Shirogane Blue Pond: place the color inside Biei's landscape
The pond's color varies with light, weather and water conditions, so no image can be promised. Visit as one part of a researched Biei and Shirogane route, respect the designated paths and check road or bus access rather than building a long transfer around a single photograph.

8
Asahiyama Zoo: watch behavior through habitat-led exhibits
Asahikawa's municipal zoo is known for exhibits designed to reveal how animals move and behave. Use the city's current opening calendar and access guidance, allow for seasonal exhibit changes and keep the visit separate from assumptions about wild-animal encounters elsewhere on the island.

9
Shiretoko: enter a protected ecosystem with restraint
This World Natural Heritage landscape links sea ice, forest, rivers and a rich food web that supports brown bears, marine mammals and seabirds. Choose a licensed or official program when appropriate, obey closures and wildlife distances, and never stop or feed animals for a photograph.

10
Akan-Mashu: build an eastern chapter around calderas
Lake Akan, Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo sit within a volcanic landscape of forests, wetlands and hot-spring areas. Distances and limited public transport reward an overnight or a carefully researched driving loop; protect viewpoints and trails, and verify volcanic, road and weather notices.
