9 Lençóis Maranhenses experiences that explain the park.
This first layer prioritizes real circuits and landscapes documented by ICMBio. Seasonal lagoon names can change in relevance as rain and moving dunes reshape the field, so the route matters more than chasing a static checklist.
🌅
1. Lagoa Bonita Circuit
From Barreirinhas, the Lagoa Bonita circuit combines authorized 4x4 access across sandy tracks with a wooden stair approach to the dune field. The reward is a broad elevated view over dunes, freshwater lagoons and surrounding vegetation; the circuit can include Lagoa Bonita, Lagoa do Clone and Lagoa do Descanso when conditions support them.

2. Lagoa Azul Circuit
Lagoa Azul is one of the classic Barreirinhas routes, but the useful way to understand it is as a moving lagoon circuit rather than one permanent pool. ICMBio notes that nearby lagoons such as Preguiça, Esmeralda and Peixe can appear or disappear with rainfall, wind and dune dynamics. Go for the dune-field experience and freshwater stops that are viable at the time.

3. Lagoa da Esperança
Near the Barreirinhas–Santo Amaro boundary, Lagoa da Esperança sits among large dunes but differs from many postcard circuits because native vegetation frames the area and the Rio Negro begins nearby. It is a more distant outing from Barreirinhas, making it better for travelers who want to understand the park's hydrology and vegetation as well as its open sand.

4. Circuito Andorinha
Close to Santo Amaro, Circuito Andorinha links the national-park edge with lagoons such as Andorinha, Maçarico and Gaivota, plus nearby municipal-park lagoons depending on the route. Access can involve accredited vehicles or walking. It is one of the clearest examples of why Santo Amaro works as a different gateway rather than simply a quieter version of Barreirinhas.

5. Circuito Betânia + Rio Alegre
Betânia is a traditional community inside the park where the Rio Alegre curves past a visitor-support area with local restaurants and hammocks. The circuit can combine the river, Lagoa da Betânia and other lagoon stops whose relevance changes with the season. This is where community life, river landscape and dunes become part of the same day instead of separate attractions.

6. Lagoa das Emendadas
The Emendadas circuit near Santo Amaro is named for two lagoons that can join when water volume is high. Reaching the site requires a meaningful walk from the circuit parking area, including dune climbs, so it suits travelers who want more physical engagement with the landscape instead of a short vehicle-to-lagoon transfer.

7. Canto dos Lençóis + Atins edge
At the park's northeastern side, Canto dos Lençóis sits at the dune edge while the village of Atins lies outside the national park facing the mouth of the Rio Preguiças. The contrast matters: Canto dos Lençóis connects directly to the protected landscape and the long-distance crossing, while Atins functions as a simple coastal base for walking, water sports and access to nearby authorized routes.

8. Foz do Rio Negro + Lagoa Verde
From the Atins side, the Rio Negro route follows the park beach toward the point where the river meets the Atlantic, with Lagoa Verde as a possible lagoon stop. ICMBio specifically recommends checking viability with authorized local providers because water in the river and small coastal cascades varies. Treat this as a conditions-dependent coastal route, not a guaranteed swimming itinerary.

9. Travessia dos Lençóis
The Travessia is the park's long-course trek from the Atins side toward Santo Amaro through the sensitive Primitive Zone, where tourist access is allowed only on foot. Under the current 2026 ICMBio rules, advance reservations at community support points are mandatory, groups are limited to 10 visitors per guide and overnight trekking groups must carry an appropriate human-waste collector. Traditional communities such as Queimada dos Britos and Baixa Grande are part of the crossing landscape.
