What to do
Ten Lyon experiences that explain the city.
The core is deliberately broader than a landmark checklist: Roman archaeology, Renaissance passages, silk-worker urbanism, food culture, encyclopedic museums, river geography, cinema and green space.
🏘️
Vieux Lyon & its public traboules
Walk Saint-Jean, Saint-Paul and Saint-Georges for Renaissance courtyards, the cathedral quarter and passageways that connect streets through buildings. The traboules are not an open-air theme park: many cross residential property, only a minority are publicly accessible and quiet, respectful passage matters.

⛪
Fourvière Basilica & panorama
Ride funicular F2 from Vieux Lyon or climb through the hill paths to the basilica and esplanade. The interior combines Byzantine, Gothic and Romanesque references; the viewpoint makes Lyon’s two-river structure legible before you return downhill.

🏛️
Lugdunum Museum & Roman theatres
Use the museum and archaeological site together to understand Lugdunum, founded in 43 BC and developed as a major Roman center. The hillside museum is embedded beside the ancient theatre and odeon, so the experience connects objects, urban history and the surviving landscape.

🌉
Presqu’île from Bellecour to Terreaux
Walk the central peninsula between the Rhône and Saône rather than treating Place Bellecour as an isolated square. The route can connect 19th-century façades, commercial streets, Place des Jacobins, Hôtel de Ville, Opéra and Place des Terreaux in one coherent urban sequence.

Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon
Inside the former Saint-Pierre abbey on Place des Terreaux, the museum spans antiquities, decorative arts, medals, paintings and sculpture across seventy galleries. It is Lyon’s strongest all-purpose art museum and deserves a focused collection plan rather than a rushed lap.

🧵
Croix-Rousse & canut history
The former silk-working hill has a different scale and identity from Vieux Lyon. Explore slopes, stairways, courtyards and selected traboules while reading the tall-windowed buildings as working architecture shaped by the canuts and their looms.

Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse
Use the covered market as an introduction to Lyonnaise food culture, not as a claim that every stall suits every budget. Browse cheesemongers, charcutiers, pastry, seafood and prepared specialties, then choose a tasting or meal deliberately instead of attempting to sample everything.

🌳
Parc de la Tête d’Or
Lyon’s major urban park adds a lake, botanical collections and broad landscaped space to a museum-heavy itinerary. It works especially well with the Rhône riverbanks or the 6th arrondissement and gives families and repeat visitors a slower counterpoint to the historic center.

🧬
Musée des Confluences
At the meeting of the Rhône and Saône, the museum links natural science, human societies and technology through four permanent thematic rooms and changing exhibitions. The deconstructivist building and surrounding river landscape make the site part of the visit.

🎬
Institut Lumière & Monplaisir
Travel to the Lumière family site on Rue du Premier-Film to connect Lyon with early cinema. The museum occupies Villa Lumière near the place where the Lumière cinematograph was developed and the first Lumière film was made, giving film history a physical neighborhood context.
