What to do
Ten experiences that explain Naples as a city of layers.
The editorial set moves from the UNESCO street system and Vesuvian collections to sacred patronage, underground infrastructure, Bourbon power, hill museums and neighborhood renewal. Optional partner inventory does not count toward these ten.
🧭
Historic center, Spaccanapoli and Santa Chiara
Start with the inherited street geometry of Greek Neapolis and the monuments layered over it. UNESCO highlights the city's successive Mediterranean cultures, while Santa Chiara adds a Gothic church, Angevin memory and a cloister inside the working center. Walk this as an urban system rather than a single “old town” photo stop.

MANN archaeological collections
The National Archaeological Museum is the intellectual anchor for ancient Campania. Its official collection includes Farnese sculpture, mosaics, frescoes, the Villa of the Papyri, Pompeian domestic objects and material from the Temple of Isis. Choose two or three collection questions instead of attempting every gallery.

Cappella Sansevero and the Veiled Christ
Giuseppe Sanmartino's Veiled Christ is carved with its shroud from the same block of marble, but the chapel is more than one sculpture: it is an aristocratic mausoleum, a program of allegorical works and the personal project of Raimondo di Sangro. Use the official reservation channel and respect the museum's controlled visit.

⛪
Duomo and the Treasure of San Gennaro
The cathedral complex joins the Duomo, the early Christian baptistery and Santa Restituta, while the adjacent Royal Chapel and Treasure museum explain the city's relationship with its patron saint through Neapolitan Baroque silverwork and civic devotion. Treat church access and museum access as separate checks.

Napoli Sotterranea
Descend from Piazza San Gaetano into cavities cut through volcanic tuff. The official route connects Greek-era cisterns, Roman aqueduct infrastructure, later water systems and Second World War shelters, then extends to remains of the Greek–Roman theatre. Review stairs, narrow passages and accessibility before booking.

Palazzo Reale and Piazza del Plebiscito
For more than three centuries the Royal Palace was a center of power in Naples and southern Italy. Its state rooms, courtyards, gardens, Caruso Museum and architectural history explain the Spanish viceregal and Bourbon city around Piazza del Plebiscito. Check the current route because rooms can close temporarily.

Teatro di San Carlo
San Carlo's 1737 foundation predates La Scala and La Fenice, making the theatre a central part of Naples' royal and musical identity. A guided visit and a live performance are different experiences: use the current official calendar for productions, or confirm the guided route through the historic hall, box tiers and theatre archive.

Castel Sant'Elmo and Certosa di San Martino
Vomero's fortress and former Carthusian monastery form one hill chapter, not two unrelated viewpoints. Sant'Elmo adds a star-shaped military structure and twentieth-century museum; San Martino preserves art, nativity traditions, naval and civic collections that narrate Naples as capital of southern kingdoms.

Capodimonte Museum and Real Bosco
The Bourbon hilltop palace was built around the Farnese inheritance and now holds major Italian and Neapolitan collections from medieval to contemporary art. Pair focused galleries with the Real Bosco rather than compressing the site into a quick taxi stop; its scale and separation from the center deserve a dedicated block.

Catacombs of San Gennaro and Rione Sanità
The catacombs preserve early-Christian burial spaces, bishops' tombs and some of southern Italy's earliest Christian painting. The modern visit also belongs to Sanità: the local cooperative links heritage access with neighborhood employment and regeneration. Follow the guided route and give the district time above ground.
