Orlando

Plan Orlando as a collection of distinct vacation zones, not one giant theme park. Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld can each consume full days; International Drive adds independent attractions and nightlife, while downtown Orlando, Winter Park and classic Florida wildlife experiences give the trip a different rhythm when you need a break from turnstiles.

What to do

Ten Orlando experiences worth building a first trip around.

A balanced shortlist across Disney, Universal, marine life, classic Florida wildlife, International Drive and downtown Orlando — with enough variety to avoid making every day feel identical.

🏰

Magic Kingdom Park

For the classic Walt Disney World experience, Magic Kingdom is built around Cinderella Castle, character-driven lands and long-running attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion and Dumbo. It is the strongest choice when the trip centers on Disney tradition, younger children or a first family visit. Treat it as a full-day anchor.

Disney · icons · families
🌐

EPCOT

EPCOT balances large-scale rides with World Showcase, seasonal festivals and a slower evening pace than a pure coaster park. Current headline experiences include Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After and the reimagined Test Track.

Disney · food · World Showcase
🌳

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom earns a separate day because the experience is built around live animals, landscaping and themed environments rather than simply another set of rides. Kilimanjaro Safaris, Pandora — The World of Avatar, Expedition Everest and the Tree of Life create a different rhythm from Magic Kingdom or EPCOT.

Disney · wildlife · immersive lands
🌌

Universal Epic Universe

Epic Universe is now a core part of the Universal Orlando conversation, with themed worlds built around franchises including Super Nintendo, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon and Universal Monsters. Give it its own day and check the official Universal app/site for current operating details before travel.

Universal · new-generation park · full day
🦖

Universal Islands of Adventure

Choose Islands of Adventure when thrill rides and highly themed lands are the priority. The park includes The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade, Jurassic Park, Marvel Super Hero Island and Seuss Landing, with headline rides such as Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Jurassic World VelociCoaster.

Universal · coasters · Harry Potter
🐋

SeaWorld Orlando

SeaWorld combines marine-animal presentations and habitats with a serious coaster lineup, so it works for families whose interests split between animals and thrill rides. Its program rotates seasonal events through the year, so verify the official calendar for your dates.

Marine life · coasters · events
🐬

Discovery Cove

Discovery Cove is the deliberately slower counterpoint to Orlando’s high-capacity parks: a reservation-limited day resort focused on tropical water environments, snorkeling, relaxation and optional animal experiences. It makes the most sense as a recovery day between harder-charging park days.

Water · relaxation · limited-entry day
🐊

Gatorland

Gatorland delivers a distinctly Florida experience that the big resort parks cannot replicate. The attraction centers on alligators, crocodiles, a breeding marsh, wildlife education and outdoor experiences; its Screamin’ Gator Zip Line crosses above the breeding marsh.

Florida wildlife · outdoors · half day
🎡

ICON Park & International Drive

Use ICON Park as an easy evening or half-day in the International Drive corridor rather than another all-day theme park commitment. The complex combines The Orlando Eye with dining, shops and independent attractions and works especially well on arrival day or after a lighter park schedule.

I-Drive · observation wheel · evening
🦢

Downtown Orlando & Lake Eola Park

Lake Eola is the clearest way to experience Orlando as a real city rather than only a resort destination. The city park sits in the heart of downtown with a 0.9-mile path around the lake, skyline views, swans, pedal-boat rentals and the Walt Disney Amphitheater.

Downtown · lake walk · local reset

Restaurants

Five Orlando dining picks that prove the city is more than park food.

This is an editorial shortlist, not a ranking. It mixes a destination tasting menu, intimate omakase, a Winter Park gastropub, ramen in Audubon Park and a casual Southern brunch stop.

✨

Victoria & Albert’s · Disney’s Grand Floridian

Special-occasion pick. Walt Disney World describes Victoria & Albert’s as its premium restaurant, built around contemporary American tasting menus, pairings and highly personalized service. Disney’s current page also notes the restaurant has held a MICHELIN star since 2024.

Kadence · Audubon Park

Intimate omakase pick. Kadence is a small sushi and kappo restaurant in Orlando’s Audubon Park Garden District, centered on multi-course menus and a carefully curated sake program. Reservations are required.

Hotels & where to stay

In Orlando, location can save more energy than a bigger room.

Disney, Universal, International Drive and the real city of Orlando are separate experiences. Choose the zone that matches most of your itinerary before comparing individual properties.

Six areas to consider

🏰

Walt Disney World Resort

Best for: Disney-first trips, families who value resort transportation and travelers planning several consecutive Disney park days. The trade-off is geographic: Universal, I-Drive and Orlando’s local neighborhoods are separate drives.

Disney-first · resort bubble
🛍️

Lake Buena Vista & Disney Springs

Best for: travelers who want strong Disney access with more off-site flexibility, restaurant choice and shopping. Traffic around major corridors means “near Disney” does not always mean a very short transfer.

Disney access · dining · flexible
🌌

Universal Orlando & Epic Universe corridor

Best for: Universal-heavy itineraries and travelers who want hotel benefits tied directly to the resort. Epic Universe sits on a separate southern campus from Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, so transport patterns still matter.

Universal-first · park benefits
🎡

International Drive & Convention Center

Best for: mixed-resort trips, conventions, ICON Park, restaurant variety and travelers who do not want to live inside one theme-park bubble. The trade-off is traffic and a more commercial corridor atmosphere.

Central corridor · conventions · dining
🦢

Downtown Orlando & Thornton Park

Best for: travelers who want Lake Eola, nightlife, performances and a local-city feel. The compromise is distance from the major parks, so this base works best for repeat visitors or split stays.

Local city · nightlife · Lake Eola
🌳

Winter Park & Audubon Park

Best for: food-focused repeat visitors, couples, museums, Park Avenue and a quieter neighborhood rhythm. It is not a theme-park convenience base, but it is one of the clearest ways to experience Central Florida beyond the tourism districts.

Dining · museums · neighborhood feel

🇮🇹

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando

Universal premium pick. Portofino Bay combines a themed harbor-resort atmosphere with Universal hotel benefits. Current guidance confirms Universal Express Unlimited access at participating rides in Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure; that Express benefit does not extend to Epic Universe.

Universal · premium · Express benefit
☀️

Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Loews Hotel

Epic Universe location pick. Helios Grand sits at the end of Celestial Park and has its own dedicated entrance into Universal Epic Universe for hotel guests with valid park admission. It also offers complimentary transportation around the Universal destination.

Hyatt Regency Orlando · International Drive

I-Drive/convention pick. Hyatt Regency Orlando is on International Drive near the Orange County Convention Center, with resort pools, spa facilities and multiple on-site dining options. Current hotel guidance also notes scheduled transportation to selected major attractions.

🎨

The Alfond Inn · Winter Park

Boutique/local pick. Owned by Rollins College, The Alfond Inn is an art-filled boutique hotel just off Park Avenue in Winter Park, with easy walking access to local dining, museums and Rollins College.

When to go

Choose Orlando dates by heat tolerance, school calendars and the events you actually want.

There is no single “best” month. A park-heavy family trip, a Halloween trip and a lower-intensity adult getaway reward different dates.

🧥

January–February · long park days

Best for: travelers who value cooler conditions and can travel outside major school holidays. Even in winter, weather can swing, so pack a light layer and still build sun protection into full outdoor days.

Cooler rhythm · park stamina
🌼

March–April · spring balance

Best for: travelers who want milder weather before summer. The trade-off is demand around spring-break and Easter periods, so compare hotel and park calendars before locking flights.

Milder weather · school-break pressure
☀️

May–September · pools, heat and storms

Best for: travelers comfortable with heat who want water parks, resort pools and long daylight. Build indoor breaks and hydration into park days rather than treating midday as unlimited touring time. Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1–November 30, so flexible plans and current forecasts matter.

Hot · humid · weather-flexible
🎃

Late August–October · Halloween season

Best for: travelers who actively want separately ticketed Halloween events and horror nights. This period can justify the trip on its own, but regular park hours and event-night access can differ, so build the calendar before buying everything else.

Halloween · special events
🍂

November · festivals and improving comfort

Best for: food-focused and repeat visitors. EPCOT’s Food & Wine Festival runs deep into November in 2026, while later-season conditions can be easier for long walking days than peak summer.

Food · shoulder-season feel
🎄

December · holiday atmosphere

Best for: travelers prioritizing seasonal decorations and holiday programming. The strongest holiday periods can also bring high demand, so treat dates near major school breaks differently from early-December travel.

Holiday events · high-demand dates

👻

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Select nights August 7–October 31, 2026. This is a separately ticketed Magic Kingdom event, not normal evening entertainment included automatically with a standard daytime ticket. Disney now marks every 2026 party date as sold out, so do not plan around buying a new event ticket.

Magic Kingdom · 2026 sold out
🩸

Halloween Horror Nights

Select nights August 28–November 1, 2026. Universal Studios Florida’s 35th-anniversary event is now underway for 2026. Treat it as its own evening plan and verify the official event calendar because event nights and ticket products are date-specific.

Universal · Aug 28–Nov 1
Seasonality research was rechecked 6 Oct 2026 against current Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando materials. Disney confirms EPCOT Food & Wine for 27 Aug–21 Nov 2026 and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party on select nights 7 Aug–31 Oct 2026 and marks all 2026 dates sold out; Universal confirms Halloween Horror Nights on select nights 28 Aug–1 Nov 2026. Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 Jun–30 Nov. Event dates, hours and ticket rules can change.
Arrival & transport

MCO is straightforward; the hard part is choosing how you will move between Orlando’s separate resort zones.

Do not assume one transport system covers Disney, Universal, International Drive and downtown. Plan the airport transfer and the daily resort-to-resort strategy as two separate decisions.

✈️

Orlando International Airport · MCO

MCO is the primary gateway for most visitors and uses Terminals A, B and C. Current airport guidance says the Terminal Link operates 24/7 between Terminal B and the Train Station; reaching Terminal C from there requires the connected walk through Garage C. A separate 24-hour shuttle bus also connects Terminal B and Terminal C. Check your airline’s terminal before arrival rather than relying on an old map.

Main gateway · A/B/C terminals
📱

Ride-share & taxi

Ride-share is the simplest door-to-door option for many travelers without a car. MCO currently assigns ride-share pickup to the arrivals curb at Terminals A and B and Level 6 at Terminal C; taxi positions also differ by terminal. Follow live airport signage because curb assignments can change.

Door-to-door · terminal-specific pickup
🚌

LYNX public bus

LYNX serves MCO from the A-Side Ground Transportation Level. Current LYNX fares are $2 for a single ride and $4.50 for an all-day pass. The April 2026 schedule book lists Route 311 as Disney/Orlando International Airport/Universal Epic Universe, serving MCO, Universal Epic Universe, Destination Parkway and Disney Springs; check the current schedule for exact trip stops because not every departure serves every intermediate stop.

$2 current single ride · regional network
🚝

Inside Walt Disney World

Disney’s official transport network includes complimentary buses, boats, monorails and Disney Skyliner. The systems work well inside the Disney ecosystem, but they do not turn Orlando into one connected resort: moving to Universal, I-Drive or downtown still requires a separate transport decision.

Buses · boats · monorail · Skyliner
🌌

Inside Universal Orlando

Universal hotel transport can reduce driving within the Universal destination, and some hotels have walking, shuttle or water-taxi advantages tied to specific parks. Epic Universe is on a separate campus, so confirm the hotel’s current transport pattern rather than assuming every Universal property works the same way.

Hotel-dependent · separate campuses
🚗

When a rental car earns its place

A car becomes more useful when the itinerary mixes Disney, Universal, local neighborhoods, shopping and Central Florida side trips. It can be unnecessary for a tightly focused on-site resort stay. This guide therefore opts in to the shared rental-car tool, but treats the decision as itinerary-specific rather than automatic.

Useful for mixed zones · optional
Transport guidance rechecked 19 Sep 2026 against current Orlando International Airport and LYNX materials. MCO confirms the 24-hour Terminal Link to the Train Station plus a 24-hour Terminal B–C shuttle; LYNX lists $2 single rides and $4.50 all-day passes, and its April 26, 2026 schedule book names Link 311 “Disney/Orlando Int’l Airport/Universal Epic Universe.” Re-check terminal, curb and route details near travel because airport construction and bus schedules can change.
Nearby trips

Three ways to trade theme-park gates for spaceflight, springs or the Atlantic.

These are genuine change-of-pace days, not filler attractions. They make the most sense when you have a sixth or seventh day, a rental car, or a pre-arranged excursion.

🚀

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

The Space Coast’s flagship visitor experience includes the Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour, Space Shuttle Atlantis and astronaut/spaceflight exhibits. Official driving guidance places the visitor complex roughly 50 miles/80 km east of Orlando before the final approach roads. The complex does not provide its own transportation from Orlando, so plan a car or third-party tour rather than assuming a resort shuttle exists.

Space Coast · full day · car/tour
💧

Wekiwa Springs State Park

Wekiwa Springs is the nature-reset option: clear spring water, paddling, trails and Central Florida ecosystems close to the metro area. Florida State Parks currently requires day-use entry reservations for Wekiwa Springs, so reserve before driving. The spring water is listed at about 72°F year-round.

Springs · paddling · reservation required
🏄

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach gives a park-heavy trip an Atlantic beach day, with the pier, surfing culture and family-friendly sand. Visit Florida describes Cocoa Beach as about an hour east of Orlando; it pairs naturally with a wider Space Coast stay, but combining a full Kennedy Space Center visit and a relaxed beach day can feel rushed.

Atlantic beach · surf · Space Coast
Nearby-trip research reviewed 27 Aug 2026 using Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Florida State Parks and Visit Florida. Kennedy Space Center’s official directions place the complex about 50 miles/80 km east of Orlando and its FAQ states that it does not provide Orlando transportation. Florida State Parks currently requires day-use reservations for Wekiwa Springs.
First-trip itinerary

A six-day Orlando plan that protects your energy instead of collecting park logos.

The useful unit in Orlando is the zone, not the attraction count. Keep full-scale parks on their own days and place the lighter evening or local experiences around them.

1️⃣

Day 1 · Arrival + your home zone

Check in, learn the hotel transport pattern and keep the first evening local: Disney Springs for a Disney-area stay, CityWalk for Universal, or ICON Park/I-Drive if that is your base. Avoid buying a full park day unless your arrival time genuinely supports it.

Low-pressure arrival
2️⃣

Day 2 · Magic Kingdom

Use one full day for the classic Disney anchor. Put the highest-priority rides and character experiences early, then protect a midday food/rest window if heat or crowds are draining the group.

Disney anchor day
3️⃣

Day 3 · EPCOT

Let EPCOT run later in the day: attractions first, World Showcase and dining later. During the 2026 Food & Wine Festival, build extra browsing time rather than treating the festival kiosks as a five-minute add-on.

Rides + World Showcase
4️⃣

Day 4 · Universal classic campus

Choose Islands of Adventure or Universal Studios Florida based on the group’s priorities. A park-to-park ticket can support both in one day, but only do that deliberately; first-time visitors with a long wish list may prefer a single park and CityWalk evening.

Universal Studios / Islands
5️⃣

Day 5 · Epic Universe

Give Epic Universe its own day. Its location and scale make it a poor candidate for a casual half-day add-on, especially when Super Nintendo, Harry Potter, Universal Monsters and How to Train Your Dragon are all priorities.

Epic Universe · full day
6️⃣

Day 6 · Choose your recovery style

Pick Animal Kingdom for wildlife and immersion, Discovery Cove for a slower water day, SeaWorld for marine life plus coasters, or Gatorland/Winter Park for a non-resort reset. This flexible day is what keeps a first trip from becoming six consecutive endurance tests.

Flexible sixth day
➕

Have a seventh day?

Use it for Kennedy Space Center, Wekiwa Springs or Cocoa Beach — or simply add a second day to the resort your group cares about most. A repeat favorite is usually more valuable than a rushed checkbox.

Trip cost

Start with a daily spending baseline, then price the parks separately.

These are planning baselines per person per day before the hotel room and flights. Theme-park tickets can materially change the final trip total, so add the exact parks and dates you choose in your full budget.

First-trip FAQ

Practical decisions that change the Orlando trip more than one extra ride.

Use these answers as planning logic, then verify operator-specific schedules, ticket rules and transport details for your exact dates.

How many days should a first Orlando trip have?

Five to seven days is a useful first-trip range when you want several major parks without turning every day into a marathon. If Disney and Universal are both major priorities, six or seven days gives you room for at least one flexible or lower-intensity day.

Do I need a rental car in Orlando?

Not every traveler does, especially when staying on-site at one resort and using its internal transportation plus occasional rideshare. A car becomes more useful for mixed Disney/Universal itineraries, local neighborhoods, shopping, Gatorland and Central Florida side trips. That is why this page keeps the shared rental-car tool active without calling a car mandatory.

What is the easiest way from MCO to my hotel?

For most visitors, ride-share, taxi, resort-arranged transport or a rental car are the simplest choices. Budget travelers can use LYNX from the A-Side ground-transportation level; Route 311 serves the airport, Universal Epic Universe, Destination Parkway and Disney Springs. Check your arrival terminal and the live schedule because pickup levels and trip stops can differ.

Can Disney transportation take me to Universal?

No shared resort network connects the two destinations as one system. Disney’s buses, boats, monorail and Skyliner are designed for the Walt Disney World ecosystem. For Universal, I-Drive or downtown, plan a separate rideshare, taxi, private transfer or car strategy.

Which area is best if I am doing both Disney and Universal?

There is no perfect midpoint that removes the commute entirely. Lake Buena Vista favors Disney; Universal and northern I-Drive favor the classic Universal campus; the Convention Center/I-Drive corridor is more neutral. A split stay can be efficient for a park-heavy trip.

Should I visit Disney and Universal in the same day?

For most first trips, no. Each resort has enough scale, walking and transportation overhead to justify dedicated days. Combine only lighter experiences deliberately rather than building a schedule around constant cross-city transfers.

Does hurricane season mean I should avoid Orlando from June through November?

No. NOAA defines Atlantic hurricane season as June 1 through November 30, but that does not mean a storm affects Orlando every day or every trip. It does mean travelers should watch current forecasts, keep flexible plans and understand airline/hotel cancellation terms, especially during the climatological peak later in summer and early fall.

What should I book first for an Orlando trip?

Start with fixed-date priorities: flights, hotel zone and the major park/event dates that drive the trip. Separately ticketed Halloween events and limited-capacity experiences can shape the calendar. Restaurants and lower-priority attractions should fit around those anchors rather than forcing inefficient cross-city days.
