What to do
Ten experiences that explain Puglia's full regional range.
The selection follows history, landscape and usable route clusters from Gargano to Salento. It is editorial content, not a ranking, and partner widgets do not count toward these ten experiences.
⛪
Bari Vecchia and the Basilica of San Nicola
Start with Bari's working historic core rather than using the city only as an airport. Walk from the seafront into the lanes around the Basilica of San Nicola, the cathedral and the Norman-Swabian castle, noticing how pilgrimage, domestic street life and port history overlap. Visit respectfully: the basilica remains an active religious site.

Castel del Monte and the Alta Murgia plateau
Frederick II's 13th-century octagonal castle stands on a rocky hill above the western Murge. Read its geometry and cultural synthesis together with the open plateau rather than as an isolated photo stop. Access from Andria and the final approach require their own plan; check the official monument and park guidance before departure.

Alberobello beyond one trullo street
The UNESCO property includes the dense Rione Monti and the quieter Aia Piccola, plus specific historic buildings such as Trullo Sovrano and Casa d'Amore. Walk both districts to understand mortarless dry-stone construction and the urban pattern; avoid treating occupied lanes and rooftops as a stage set.

Valle d'Itria: Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca
The Itria Valley makes more sense as a landscape of trulli, dry-stone walls, vineyards, masserie and hill towns than as a checklist of lookalike villages. Pair two towns with a rural stop, giving Martina Franca's Baroque core a different role from circular Locorotondo and compact Cisternino. A car can add value here when parking and designated access are planned.

Ostuni: white hill town and olive plain
Ostuni's whitewashed core rises above the olive landscape between the Itria Valley and Adriatic coast. Climb gradually through the lanes to the cathedral area, then look outward to understand why the town is both a visual landmark and a useful regional hinge. The steep, polished streets make footwear and drop-off planning part of the visit.

Polignano a Mare and Monopoli as one coastal pair
Polignano's Lama Monachile and cliff-edge old town deliver the dramatic view; Monopoli adds a fortified waterfront, old harbor and a larger lived-in center. Connecting them by rail can create a car-free day, but each town deserves its own walking loop. Treat the famous cove as a landscape first and verify live bathing conditions before entering the water.

Lecce's Baroque stone and Roman layers
Lecce is the southern cultural anchor, not merely a base for beaches. Build a walk around Santa Croce, Piazza del Duomo and the Roman remains, watching how the soft local limestone supports exuberant façades and intimate courtyards. An evening return reveals a city rhythm that a midday excursion misses.

Otranto and the Adriatic edge of Salento
Otranto combines a fortified old town, cathedral mosaics and a harbor facing the Strait of Otranto. Make it the historic anchor for the eastern Salento coast, then add a compatible landscape stop rather than racing onward to multiple beaches. The route toward Santa Maria di Leuca includes exposed coastal sections where heat, wind and access matter.

Taranto and the National Archaeological Museum
Taranto opens a different Puglia through its Spartan foundation, Magna Graecia collections and two-sea geography. Make MArTA the interpretive center, then connect the old city, swing bridge and waterfront. Check the museum's official notices directly; the archaeological visit is too important to build around an assumed permanent timetable.

Gargano: Foresta Umbra, Vieste and the Tremiti option
Gargano is a northern peninsula of beech forest, limestone coast, pilgrimage towns and marine routes—not a detour from southern Salento. Base the chapter around Vieste or another practical town, give Foresta Umbra its own walk and add the Tremiti Islands only when the official boat schedule, sea conditions and onward plan all work.
